Description
This online video course focuses on playful mixed media art exploration. In this course, we’ll explore a variety of simple techniques and projects using watercolor, acrylics and collage. Each section includes activities that will help you to gain confidence with your materials while letting go of perfectionism.
We’ll start off by transforming a stack of inexpensive plain and/or free recycled papers into a treasure trove of decorative papers for your collage stash. This process is so freeing and fun and my favorite way to loosen up and get into a state of creative flow- especially on the days I’m feeling very uninspired to make art. We’ll explore simple techniques for creating patterns and texture using inexpensive and found objects.
This course includes three start-to-finish, guided, mixed media painting projects, a simple journal-making project, and as a bonus, I’ll show you the simplest technique for making your own expressive stencils (no complicated cutting required!)
The mixed media projects are what I consider to be “expressive representational”- which in simple terms means the finished piece will represent something tangible (specifically for this course, a bird in a nest, a marshy landscape, and a grove of trees on a moonlit night) but it’s meant to be stylized art, not a photo realistic reproduction; The focus will be on color, pattern and organic shapes so the result will be expressive and unique. For the most part there are no drawing skills required. We’ll begin with a SIMPLE sketch (that you can trace if you’d like), select a few sheets of your favorite papers from your stash (created in the first part of this course) and start tearing, cutting and gluing our hearts out.
My ultimate goal for this course is that at its end, you’ll walk away with a crinkly, well-loved art journal that is filled with personal treasures and a record of the start of your new creative journey. But keep in mind, any sketchbook can be used for this class- handmade or purchased. Please see my recommended Supply List for more information.
