In my opinion, true happiness can be achieved only if our lives include a good balance of elements that can be categorized into 3 different “happiness buckets”.

The buckets are related to how we feel- both physically and emotionally. And I believe there are some simple actions we can all take to track and fill each of those buckets.

1) Sensory Pleasure (an ACHIEVE journal element)

Sensory pleasure is pleasure we get, quite simply, from our senses. If you take it to the most basic level, it begins with the need to eliminate discomfort– to be free from hunger and pain- and that requires good health. Once our basic needs are met, we normally associate this bucket with the nicer things that money can buy: delicious food, fine wine, an amazing sound system.

2) Inner Contentment (a BREATHE journal element)

We live in a fast, hectic and sometimes crazy world. It’s so easy to get caught up in the small stuff, or get too focused on just one bucket. No matter what obstacles life has thrown your way, no matter how busy you are, it’s so important to give yourself permission to take time for you. Keep a gratitude journal, write poetry, dance, meditate, make art. Find that thing that allows you to disconnect from all the noise in your head so you can be present for a moment, and just breathe.

3) Emotional Bonds (a CONNECT journal element)

Many would place parent-child and romantic love at the very top of that chart, but all relationships contribute to this bucket. In broad terms, every connection we make matters from the friendly teller you exchange words with at your local bank to the stranger you smile at in passing. And yes, even our pets fall into this bucket. (Sometimes, especially our pets!)

I believe the real key lies in our ability not only to fill those buckets, but in our ability to balance them. And the best part is that it’s not hard to do once you are aware of how each of your buckets is faring with respect to the others.
